Design

Let’s start with the X80 Pro’s stunning design. Its design is obviously an improvement over the X70 Pro from the previous year, but with a considerably greater camera hump. It has a luxurious appearance because of the curved front and back glass. It is also much more pleasant to grip in the hand because of the curved edges. This is advantageous, especially given how slick the back glass feels to the touch.

The same “Fluorite AG” surface, which does a great job of obscuring fingerprints, is present on the back glass. The glass looks fantastic and shimmers brilliantly when the light catches it in a specific manner.

The rear camera module, which is enormous, follows. It covers the whole width of the back and is surrounded by a circle that contains three of the four rear cameras. The fourth periscope camera and a flash module are located outside the circle.

The X80 Pro’s display is undoubtedly of premium calibre. It is a 6.78-inch, 10-bit panel with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz that vivo refers to as the 2K E5 Ultra Vision Screen.

Camera

The camera technology for the X80 Pro was jointly developed by ZEISS. It has vivo’s proprietary V1+ chip, a co-processor made specifically for the company to enhance photo quality. The camera system also offers a variety of features that enhance the experience, including glass lenses that lessen dispersion, ZEISS optics, and T* coating.

When compared to the X70 Pro, the Camera app’s user interface has undergone minor changes. A few shortcuts have been modified, and the highlighted text is a little bit crisper and stronger. The “More” menu contains all of the optional options, including Double Exposure, Dual View, Astro, and Supermoon. The X80 Pro works really well in favourable lighting.

In terms of videography, the X80 Pro is comparable to other flagships in that it can capture footage at up to 8K 30fps. The video quality was adequate at 4K 60fps, but nothing special. However, stabilisation was outstanding. There is absolutely no support for 4K on the front camera, which only supports up to 1080p 60fps.

Software, UI and Apps

With the Funtouch OS 12 layer on top, Android 12 is the default operating system for the vivo X80 Pro. The phone was patched with the June 2022 Android security update at the time of this review. In comparison to other smartphones, vivo has guaranteed three generations of OS upgrades and three years of security patches.

The standard set of features seen in Funtouch OS 12 are there, including gesture navigation, RAM expansion, app lock, themes, and other customization choices. Deep customization options are available, including the ability to change Always-on-display settings, system-wide colours, and the animations that may be defined for certain system activities. When a game is launched, the Ultra-Game mode will optimise system resources. For former Funtouch OS users, the software is easy to use, and it has a low learning curve for new users.

Performance and Benchmarks

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor powers the vivo X80 Pro, which is predicted to be a top smartphone in 2022. It has 4 Kryo Efficiency CPUs (A510-based) at up to 1.80GHz, 3 Kryo Performance CPUs (A710-based) at up to 2.50GHz, and 1 Kryo Prime CPU (Arm Cortex-X2-based) with a maximum speed of 3.0GHz. It contains their most recent Adreno GPU for the GPU, which boasts a 30% increase in graphics rendering capabilities and a 25% reduction in power consumption over the previous iteration.

Simply told, the vivo X80 Pro performs excellently. I seldom ever had any problems, and everything moves quickly and smoothly. Regular day-to-day chores on the phone went without a hitch, and fluid animations are made possible by the display’s 120Hz refresh rate. The phone allows for RAM extension, making 4GB of additional capacity possible. As a result, multitasking was advantageous and programmes continued to run in the background.

Battery Life

The X80 Pro includes a 4700mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly at 50W and at a maximum rate of 80W when using a cable connection. The battery performs superbly in terms of performance. I could use the phone for nearly two full days with light to moderate use and a screen-on duration of more than eight hours. The phone could still easily last me a day even when used heavily.

The X80 Pro’s built-in adaptor supports 80W Flashcharge. It took me around 36 minutes to fully charge the phone from 5% to 100%, which is not the quickest. The phone was obviously heated during this time.

Verdict

The X80 Pro boasts several positive attributes, including a stunning design, first-rate build quality, an excellent display, and excellent performance. There are a tonne of entertaining filters and additional camera capabilities, and the primary camera is flagship-worthy. With quick charging, the battery life is likewise good. If I had to single out one issue with this phone, it would be Funtouch OS and the volume of advertisements displayed.
