OnePlus 10 Pro Review: A fantastic flagship model

This year’s debut of the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G was a little unusual for a few reasons. It was first introduced in China in early 2022 and is just now making its way to other nations, including India. Second, unlike the three models that launched with the 9 series in India last year, the new 10 series has only one model so far. I’m sure a lower-cost OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10R will be released later this year, but for the time being, we’re only interested in the flagship model.

The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G picks up where the OnePlus 9 Pro (Review) left off, with a bevy of improvements that should make it a better flagship on paper. The redesigned design, enhanced selfie camera, and bigger battery with faster charging are the ones that stand out to me. It’s time to see if the new OnePlus 10 Pro 5G is everything it claims to be.

Price in India

First and foremost, there is the pricing in India. It is priced at Rs. 66,999 and has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There’s also a top-of-the-line model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for Rs. 71,999. The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G is around Rs. 2,000 more expensive than the OnePlus 9 Pro when it was first released. Volcanic Black, as well as Emerald Forest, will be the two colors offered in India.

Specifications and software of OnePlus 10 Pro

There are no points for guessing the SoC in the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G: it utilizes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 like every other Android flagship in 2022. LPDDR5 RAM as well as UFS 3.1 storage is present in this device. The cooling mechanism on the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G is said to be the company’s most advanced ever, and it should be able to keep the processor cool even while under stress, according to OnePlus. A new linear haptic motor called the ‘SLA X-axis’ is supposed to be more responsive, stronger, and quieter than the one found in the OnePlus 9 (Review) and 9 Pro. In India, the 10 Pro 5G supports a total of nine 5G bands, compared to just two on the 9 Pro.

Battery life and Performance

The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G is a big, weighty phone that takes a while to get used to. Switching to the 10 Pro 5G is simple if you currently have a huge phone. The phone’s finish can be slick, which is where the included case comes in useful. It doesn’t detract too much from the overall appearance and provides excellent grip and protection. The fingerprint sensor embedded in the touchscreen is responsive and has never failed to unlock the phone when needed. Face recognition worked well when there was enough ambient light, but struggled in low-light situations.

For viewing content, the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G’s display provided excellent colors and sharpness. Resolution set to ‘Auto-select’ so that depending on the material, it could transition between full-HD+ and QHD+. The HDR films looked fantastic, and the stereo speakers added to the whole experience. I wish the stereo effect was more balanced because the bottom speaker seemed a little fuller than the earpiece. As expected, the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G fared well in benchmarks. It maxed up the 3DMark Slingshot test suites and received 8,31,613 points in AnTuTu.

Camera

The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G’s three rear cameras utilize what OnePlus claims is its second-generation ‘Hasselblad Camera for Mobile’ colour science, which was developed in collaboration with Hasselblad. While the main and telephoto camera sensors are identical to those found on the iPhone 9 Pro, the ultra-wide, as well as selfie camera sensors, are all new. Although the ultra-wide camera boasts a 50-megapixel resolution, it is built on a Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor. This is a smaller sensor with lower pixels than the superb Sony IMX766 sensor in the 9 Pro, and on paper, this is a downgrade.

There is no macro option on the 10 Pro 5G since it lacks autofocus. One advantage is its 150-degree field of vision, which allows you to snap some creative photos. With the addition of a Sony IMX615 sensor, OnePlus has finally improved its flagship’s front camera. Although it boasts a better 32-megapixel resolution, it still has a fixed focus and f/2.4 aperture, as well as being limited to 1080p video capture.

Design

The style and positioning of the camera module of the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G first drew some criticism since it resembled a cooking stove. I believe it’s quite unique and far superior to the camera module on the 9 Pro. Samsung’s latest flagships, in which the camera module blends with the side frame, appear to have been a source of inspiration. I like the green colour that the OnePlus chose. Also,  the matte glass texture on both colour variants is a fantastic design decision in my opinion. This green colour and finish reminded me a lot of the OnePlus 8 Pro (Review). Which is still one of OnePlus’ best-designed phones.

Verdict

The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G offers some much-needed improvements over the OnePlus 9 Pro. With only a little price increase, it’s not a terrible buy. Even the most costly form of the 10 Pro 5G is less expensive than the Samsung Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13 basic models. Making it an excellent buy. The OnePlus 10 Pro 5G has a larger battery with faster charging. Somewhat a more power-efficient AMOLED display, a more powerful SoC with many more 5G bands. It also has a better selfie camera and a prettier design than the OnePlus 9 Pro.

The iQoo 9 Pro is the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G‘s most serious rival. It’s not just comparable in terms of price. But it’s also practically identical in terms of features to the 10 Pro 5G. The Realme GT 2 Pro is also on the way and based on what we already know about it. It has the potential to be a major disruptor if Realme is aggressive with the price. Aside from these minor flaws, the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G is another fantastic flagship from OnePlus. It offers excellent performance and features for the price.
